Methodology

Sentiment Scores

Calculation Method

Sentiment score for a great power GP in a year y and corpus C is the logged ratio of the number of positive GP mentions (p) to the number of negative GP mentions (n) in a year made by a party or a media outlet, divided by the ratio of the number of positive sentences to the number of negative sentences in a year made by a party or media outlet.

Neutral Score Interpretation

This score yields zero (neutral), if the ratio of positive to negative sentiments regarding a GP is equal to the overall positive to negative sentiments in a given year, meaning the communication regarding the Great Power did not differ from the overall communication of a party or media outlet.

Score Interpretation Guide

0
indicates neutral sentiment
+1
means approximately 2.7× more positive than usual
-1
means approximately 2.7× more negative than usual
